Southern is 1-1, having lost to Lafayette 45-6 and winning against NAIA member Central Methodist 56-14. These first two games make it difficult to tell about the outlook of Southern as they lost and won games as expected. Are the Jags expected to be much better this year from last?

I was mowing the grass today. And when you mow the grass you have a lot of time for thought. I was thinking that it's been almost a decade since we had a SLC contending team and a winning record.
Soooooo much has changed during that time. Louisiana and the catastrophic (at least for NSU) budget cuts...the landscape of college football has also changed dramatically, just in our own recruiting area. There are more FBS schools than there were 10 years ago and there are more FCS schools as well. We can't attract the type of athletes we used to back 10 yrs ago. With the millions upon millions of dollars we've lost we just don't have the money to keep pace with our peers in FCS.
I know I sound gloom and doom...I'm just not sure we'll ever recover from the "Peveto Promise". A school with limited resources and not a very attractive place to lure college kids can't afford to lose it's footing.
Even after all that I still think we are getting quality skilled position players. What is keeping us from getting over the hump is our inability to get offensive lineman and defensive lineman, and to some extent linebackers.
Thoughts?

We will beat Southern. La Tech will be difficult, but not impossible. They are not Baylor or even remotely close. Then its conference time and there isn't one team in the SLC that can't be beaten. Not one.

Not one. I am not so sure we will be able to beat Southern in Baton Rouge. I watched some of their game against Louisiana-Lafayette on espn3, and they lost by more than 30 points but really didn't look that bad. The refs did provide a little home cooking for Lafayette, and Southern dropped some touchdown passes that would have made the game more interesting. I think their lopsided loss to the demons last year has taught them a lesson. I see where they had about 6 major-college transfers who did not play against ULL because hey had not received full clearance from the Ncaa. I bet they will be ready to play against the demons on Saturday. Go Demons!

SpEaking of Southern, why did NSU have to fork up $40x to Southern last year but they not do the same for our visit to their place this year?

I'm sure it has something to do with them bringing us more money at the gate than we will bring them saturday at their place. They travel much better than we do, so there may be something in the contract about all that but i think it evened out. Also, I don't think we have gotten any worse than last year and I have a hard time believing they got 40 points better in one year. It wasn't even close and Jay called the dogs off really early. We may lay an egg like we did vs Grambling in 09..but in my humble opinion there is no way we lose if we play up to our potential.

Edward,
Southern's lopsided loss to the Demons last year taught them a most valuable life lesson ... that of not opening their big mouths and insulting their opponent. I can guarantee you NSU respects Southern and that mistake won't happen in reverse.
