I have a number of various thoughts and wonderings about the upcoming fall season. For instance, what will the Demons look like this fall after several key subtractions? How competitive will the Demons be in a new look conference? Is the transfer portal killing or helping the Demons (or college football, in general)? What is the team vibe right how after the coaching carousel this summer? Just a few questions I wonder about these days.
My initial impressions are as follows:
As to the new look team after losing a few potent weapons on offense, well, at least we have a bevy of young talent on the edge. I am referring to the Demons losing Levar Gumms to the dreaded transfer portal. He is now a Central Michigan Chippewa. More impactful is the loss of starting QB Bryce Rivers to graduation. He is back in San Antonio getting on with life after college. Now we have a new transfer from San Diego State, our old friend Kaleb Fletcher, as well as Zachary Clement and two young prospects that also look pretty good (Cotton, Barrett). It will be interesting to see how long it takes for the offense to pick up steam and perform at a high level.
I have no clue what will happen with this conference. You want to believe that there will be some other schools who will be competitive additions to the mix eventually, but right now things are a lot thinner and make scheduling really interesting. I really wonder if the Southland will be able to add a few teams from say either the Great American Conference or the Lone Star Conference. The LSC has been hit recently by other defections, but still has some quality programs. The other crazy option would be a merger with the Southern Conference to make a mega conference with West and East divisions. The biggest problems could be travel-related expenditures.
I am not a fan of the transfer portal. In my opinion, it creates a culture of chaos in college athletics. It is too easy to pack your bags and carry your athletic prowess elsewhere, if you don't feel like you are seeing the field enough or you don't like the food in the cafeteria.
I know that coaches come and go, as offers are extended, pay grades increase, family situations changes, etc., etc., etc. So, it's not a shock that Brad had to find half a staff this offseason.
I've got my season tickets, and you guessed it, I'll be in Seat 16 this fall. See you in Turpin.
