Anyone have any thoughts on this? Northwestern univ football player Kane Colter has led the charge for a college football players union. Players are voting on whether to unionize today and it could change the landscape of college football forever. Honestly, I think this is opening up a can of worms that no one can foresee....it will really hurt schools like ours and even as a former college athlete I don't see any good coming from it. The Northwestern President was quoted as saying that the university would consider dropping its football program all together if it has to pay its players. I'm sure whatever happens, there will be appeals and this will be a battle that continues for years, but still it is significant and could affect us and other cash strapped FCs schools.

I think this will eventually happen somewhere down the line. It should be based on a merit system, however. If the student-athlete graduates, they get a predetermined amount of money. This would allow them to borrow money in the form of student loans while in school and the money earned over their college career would go to help pay the loan off when they graduate. If the student-athlete doesn't graduate, they don't get a penny and have to pay the loans off with hard work. That should be the contract, if and/or when this takes hold. That would keep the APR up for the university and reward the student-athlete for all their hard work. Win-win.
