• Binghamton has won the America East regular season or tournament title in 10 of the last 11 years and it is a favorite to do it once more this season. The Bearcats will be looking for a manner of redemption after going 15-4 in conference last year only to lose both games in their America East Tournament appearance. They return five position players, but more importantly, the weekend rotation of the conference’s best pitching staff returns in tact. Pitcher of the Year Nick Gallagher (8-3, 2.67) resumes his Friday role, using an upper 80s fastball that he works on both sides of the plate along with a plus changeup and a developing breaking ball that could make him even more difficult to hit this year. He is buoyed by Jake Wloczewski (4-2, 3.19), who it the staff’s odds on favorite to continue Binghamton’s four-year streak of draft picks. He has a fastball up to 93 with a good slider and changeup. Wloczewski’s fellow senior, Nick Wegmann (4-5, 3.27), mans the Sunday role after being named second-team all-conference last year. All three Binghamton starters were in the top five of the conference in ERA with Gallagher and Wloczewski being the conference’s top two hardest to get hits off of and Wloczewski producing the best WHIP in the America East. As a staff, the Bearcats were No. 21 nationally in ERA and No. 27 in WHIP. They do have to replace closer Dylan Stock (25th round pick), but senior Joe Orlando (3-0, 3.53, 2 SV) has some experience and the staff believes he can move into the role permanently.
Led by a trio of seniors up the middle of the diamond, the offense should be balanced. CJ Nowiak (.326, 3, 18, 13 SB) is a disciplined leadoff hitter that helps the entire lineup with his ability to battle at the plate. He also is a helper with the pitching staff, using his outstanding defense in center field to take away base hits. Shortstop Paul Rufo (.347/.398/.505) does the same in the infield and is a well-rounded offensive player that will bat third in the order. His ability to get on base should give catcher Jason Agresti (.320, 5, 27) RBI opportunities behind him. Another senior Luke Tevlin (.327, 2, 12) moves from second base to first after missing the end of last seasons with an injury. Third baseman Justin Drpich (.330, 5, 27) is another name to watch after being first-team all-conference as a freshman. He guards the hot corner well and has excellent power that could break out even more this season.
