So our beloved Demons have not defeated a Division I foe since 2015. We have some new faces, better than average talent, some depth in areas we have not seen before, and coaches who have spent most of their lives living and breathing football. Will 2017 come together with wins and even a conference championship or will we be counting the days until basketball season in early October? Go Demons!!!

Do you mean Division IA? Because we are a Division I institution...we just play in FCS, otherwise known as the former I-AA

We have zero players that made the Southland conference preseason first or second team. Dave Campbell's football magazine (next to the bible over here) has us picked finishing last again.

DTNSU, we last beat a Div I team in November 2015 (SFA). The win in 2016 was a small Div II team.

I'm hoping for a much improved season. I like the coaching changes that were made this year. I liked what I saw during the practices I watched in spring. I like the improvement in the attitude of the players. The new coaches are trying to change the culture. The new Strength and Conditioning Coach, Myatt has the players buying into his program and is doing a good job holding them accountable. This should help with the conditioning and strength of the kids throughout the season and the prevention of injuries. Coach Laird appears to be running the show, and the improvements are obvious. The talent is here. It has to be developed and coached, but it is here. Whoever runs the offense at quarterback has to be consistant and avoid mistakes to win. He doesn't have to be flashy, he has to be solid and reliable. I can't tell you how many wins the changes will bring, but I do believe there will be more of them.

Go back and look at how many games we either had in hand and lost or had a chance to win late in the game last season. We weren't really overmatched by anybody except Sam Houston & we scored first on them which is more than anybody else did. I'm also hearing positive things from within the program and just hope it can translate into W's.

I see us with 5 possibility 6 wins. Look for the defense to be better which will convert the close games to wins. A lot will depend on quarterback play which is a bit iffy. Offense will be very average in my opinion which will put a lot of this season's success squarely on the D.

5 or 6 wins? Can't lose the bye week, but we won't win it too. I think I'm with Big John Shaughnessy on this one, "If we don't show up we don't have to watch them lose." and he also said, "There ain't enough beer to make me sit through a demon game this year." I'll see you all in December when Laird is head coach and we can celebrate having him to lead us back to the National Championship.

Surprised at the little interest in debate. Let me try to stir interest by saying a top side potential for this Demon football squad is 7 wins. The toughest ones to see as victories this year are; Fireworks U, UCA, Sam, and Ryan Street High. I started to list those of the 7 victories as the greatest challenges but with our recent performance we should never take anyone as less than an uphill battle. Comments?

I mean, you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I don't see us beating those 4 either. Not gonna say never, but it doesn't look likely.
I will say I have a cautious optimism with this new strength coach. He seems to have the players locked in and bought into his system which is something the team has lacked in years prior. A motivated, cohesive team can outperform a more talented team every week. It's just a matter of how motivated and cohesive they are in a real game and not just in the first few weeks of fall camp.
Being that I believe there is no way we go 1-10 again this year, I'm excited to watch some Demon football.

We need to enjoy the year for what it is. No amount of pontificating and predicting will change what's going to happen. We'll win more games this year than last year simply due to Brad Laird and the defense. Nothing against Coach Daye, but he was ready to move on and so were we. Very nice guy. Wish him the best. Laird brings an energy and commitment to the program we haven't had in a long time. You can even tell Coach Thomas is more at ease. Now, we have a high hill to climb and it could get ugly early IF we don't win at Grambling. That said, I'm just glad football season is around the corner and will enjoy it for what it is. I think we'll see the worm turn this year and next year at NSU. Good times are ahead for the patient. Yeah, we've waited a decade or so, but having angst about it all won't make winning more often happen quicker. Our chances are slim to none against La Tech, Sam Houston and Central Arkansas. We just don't have the horses in place this year. We'll compete for awhile, but we're just not there. Our chances are still slim against a McNeese squad that is down from their norm ... simply because they are in our head. I doubt this is the year we break that curse, but it will come. However, we can beat any other team left on the schedule. Will we? I doubt it, but we have 7-8 winnable games on the schedule. I say 4-7, maybe a wee bit better with some luck. Gotta start somewhere.

Went to the scrimmage yesterday. I have not heard pads popping like that in years. Thank you Brad Laird! Love the new strength coach. Very intense and involved in the scrimmage. The baseball player turned receiver is long and fast. Corners are long and tall with good speed. Freshman running back from Glen Oaks reminds me of Johnese. Thick legs and quick in the hole with good speed. Jared west looked really good. We may have found a diamond in the rough in the freshman QB from Dallas. I really like him. We are definitely bigger and faster. The scrimmage was crisp and at a fast pace. We looked well coached. I dont know what the win total will be but we are DEFINITELY better.

I think it's very likely we start the season out 0-2, finishing September 1-3 would be my guess. Lamar being our best shot at getting a win that month. I would caution everyone on here to not to totally panic if we lose at Grambling. They are extremely talented and have one of the best quarterbacks in all of FCS. We can certainly beat them but it would be an upset, they are preseason top 25 and coming off a 13-1 season easily winning the SWAC with their one loss being by 10pts at Arizona.
I think we will be better as the season goes on and possibly surprise some teams but that is a formidable stretch to start the season.
