Demons only able to take 1 of 4 from Troy to open up the season. Preseason All-SLC pitcher, soph. Adam Oller, got the start Friday night and threw very well for 4 innings. Troy caught up to him in the 5th, juco transfer Chase Hymel was brought in, but we weren't able to stop the bleeding until Troy had taken a 4-0 lead. RS Fresh Stane & Freshman Shaffer combined to pitch the final 2 2/3 and were both impressive, with Shaffer having a perfect 1,2,3 8th inning. Unfortunately the Demons were held to only 2 hits and lost the opener 6-0.
In game 2, NSU took an early lead with a Brinson HR in top 1st. Josh Oller got the start on the bump and I thought he pitched very well (5 2/3 inn, 3 runs, 4K's, 1BB). Demons hit the well and took a 7-3 lead into the 8th inning. Unfortunately, the bullpen wasn't able to hold it together, giving up 3 runs in the 8th and the tying and game winning runs in the 9th, losing 8-7.
Game 3 saw the Demon bats go cold again, getting shut out 5-0. Soph. Evan Tidwell started and did an excellent job getting us to the 7th inning only down 3-0. Troy scratched 2 more across in bot 7 to make it 5-0.
In game 4, NSU was able to put it all together. We jumped up early after a big 2-RBI double in the 1st by Webster and a 2-RBI triple by Underwood in the 2nd and took a 5-0 lead after 2 innings. Juco transfer Jeff Stovall got the start and really did a fantastic job. Gave up a couple runs here and there, but pitched how you're suppose to with a lead. Stovall went 7inn giving up 4 runs on 6 hits, with 4 K's & 1BB. Hymel came in for the 8th, and Dugas went from 1st base to the mound to pitch the 9th. Demons won game 4, 9-5.
Demons only got 1 from Troy and it hurts knowing that we gave away game 2. If we were only going to win 1 game, I guess winning game 4 isn't a bad thing if we can carry some of that momentum with us into this week. I thought our starting pitching was great. Should be very interesting to see which 3 will start next weekend. Hard to take it away from either Oller and Stovall threw a hell of a game Sunday. Game 3 is the only one I didn't watch but looks like Tidwell was very effective through 6. Good situation to be in. Senior C.J. Webster had a great weekend at the plate going 6-16 w/ 5 RBI & 3 doubles (.444 OnBase%).
Home opener is Wednesday night at Brown-Stroud against ULL. Cajuns lost 2 out of 3 at UTSA, but obviously expecting another big season.
