Well, their passing game is abusing us, too. This one is all but over.

Wow! Wow! Wow! A 14 play, 93 yard drive to tie it. Tied at 24.

Well, they were a little bit better than us according to the stats. Not much, but a little. We also got completely robbed on that last drive. I don't blame SFA, but I blame those refs for helping decide a game and not letting those kids decide it. Boys, we finish 6-6 again, but we were literally five plays away from being 9-3 -- a fumble against Missouri State, a pick-six and missed field goal at SLU and a pick going in to score and a missed field goal today. It's truly a game of inches. Good luck to SFA in the playoffs. Jay Thomas has won nearly as many games in two years as our last coach won in four. And trust me, the future is bright for NSU football. We will truly miss our Senior players from this season who have helped transition us back into a somewhat respected program again.

A completely shameful PI called on Adam Jones on that interception. First of all, the flag was thrown so late I thought it was excessive celebration, secondly he has every right to the ball as the receiver. Cost us the game, and I've never seen Jay Thomas that furious. Also the next penalty on Claiborne was a head scratcher, I can't believe the refs gave them that last drive. Regardless, you can't leave games like that in the hands of the referees. We were so thin at DL that we had OL move over to play defense this week, really proud of the way the team played and seeing the players on the field afterwards made me appreciate what they've done the past two years.

Not sure we would have gotten into the playoffs had we won the game anyway. SFA has the dubious honor of playing Northern Iowa on the road. It will take all they have and the referees to help them again to win that game. I wish them the best. UNI would have been a nightmare matchup for us with a thin DL. Best to stay home and regroup for a solid playoff run in the future. We'll get there. On another playoff note, Sam and SLU are pitted against one another in the first round, too. That's poppycock and totally unfair. But, that's the respect the SLC gets from the big boys. This is why you have to be good enough to have most of your games at home like McNeese in 1997, we did in 1998, McNeese in 2002 and Sam in their two year run to the NC game.

I'm a little late posting this, but I had to remove myself from the immediate vicinity of this loss to be able to not lose my cool. I attended the game in Nacogdoches and saw the referees show their rear ends on the last drive. SFA played well, so I won't take away from that. However, I will say that the referees gave them the last drive and the ballgame. There is no way it was pass interference on Adam Jones (he stepped in front of the receiver). Secondly, the defensive holding penalty was a joke, because the ball sailed out of bounds and was uncatchable. The flag should have been picked up. I am not sure if an Officiating committee will review any footage from this game, but they should. These guys were horrible! Rant over. Thank you!

I completely agree seat16, I too was at the game in Nacogdoches and since tweeting at the SLC after the game to make sure they knew how horrendous and embarrassing of a job that referee crew did, I've tried my hardest not to think much about it. I truly understand how difficult it can be to referee a football game at any level and refs tend to go unappreciated, but that crew did a poor job all game and completely lost it on the last drive. It was miserable to watch. The pass-interference call on Adam Jones was complete bs. There was very little contact except for 2 players going for a ball that was thrown to a covered receiver. Jones broke on the ball first and got in front of him...it was practically that simple. I'm still baffled how the back judge threw a late flag on a play that he was 15-20 yards away from when the closest official signaled 1st down Demons.
Still, after the P.I. call which was a spot foul, SFA was still only at their own 47. After picking up 10 yards on the next play to move them across the 50, Claiborne is flagged for a very, very harsh defensive holding call. D-holding isn't overturned due to an un-catchable ball, but it was still a bs penalty on a play that wasn't even close. I'm not positive but it looked like a play that the lone WR had an option route, where he either ran a vertical or run a 10 yrd comeback route. The WR broke the route off at 10 yards and Conque threw the vertical, which was thrown down near the endzone, 25-30 yards away from anyone. I know that doesn't mean much because it's defensive holding, but I'm blown away ref would call that in that situation with under a minute left in the 4th quarter. It was on the far sideline, SFA's side (same sideline the "pass-interference" call), so it was hard to see from opposing stands, but i don't think there was much contact at all.
NSU and SFA both played great games and it was an exciting game to watch. It was an absolute shame to see the officials dictate how that game was going to end. I'm sure the SLC officials do as good of a job as anyone, but that crew was awful from the beginning.
There were 3 plays that were reviewed during the game. 1st was Fred Thomas' interception in back of endzone which was rightfully reviewed and confirmed. The 3rd was review was on a deflcted pass from Adkins that was ruled an interception by SFA. It was close but the offical in the booth said they got it wrong on the field and it was over-turned. The 2nd review was during 2nd quarter on a SFA muffed punt that the Demons appeared to recover before going out of bounds. The ref on the SFA sideline, literally right in front of the play, signaled the ball was recovered in bounds and 1st down NSU. A couple seconds later, the same ref over-turned his own call and gave the ball back to SFA. Everyone in the stadium who saw the play knew that NSU recovered the ball in bounds, it was very obvious. The play was obviously reviewed and over-turned and the Demons were given the ball. Everyone makes mistakes, but I can not fathom what that referee was thinking or why he would over-turn his own call that he had the best view of in the stadium. Sorry for the rant, but my bottom line is that referee crew sucked and did an awful job. Hats off to SFA for a great game and season.

And for robbing us of that win, SFA got their due -- an entire butt whipping by Northern Iowa. So, they beat us and were rewarded by spending a lot of money to get stoned from the first play from scrimmage 1k miles from home. Karma never sleeps.

Very true. Northern Iowa controlled the game from beginning to end. UNI was impressive and if they can beat Ill. St. this weekend for 2nd time this season, I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the championship game. I'd like to think that we truly would have given UNI a much better game, but they were monsters up-front on both sides and dominated SFA up front all game. Probably not a match-up we would've wanted, and likely where we would've been sent if we beat SFA in my opinion.

I actually do think a win would've gotten us in the playoffs with our ridiculous schedule and our wins over la tech and sam. Indiana State got in with a 7-5 record and had a similar schedule we did in terms of a fbs win and loss. We would've been sent to the UNI dome and seen a similar result that SFA did, not so sure an extra week recruiting isn't a better outcome. I don't know, just trying to stay optomistic

As much as I hate to say it, from watching some FCS games this weekend the Southland's top teams are noticeably weaker than the other top teams in FCS. Best of luck to Sam but I don't see them going very far this year.

We're not weaker, the upper tier in FCS has gotten better. Midwestern, Western and East Coast teams with huge lines have added skill players from inner cities, Texas, California and/or Florida. That's a deadly combination. North Dakota State and Northern Iowa, at least the way UNI is playing right now, could beat half the FBS schools out there. There are probably a few others that could do the same. We have a long way to go, but the right man in the slot to do it. Jay knows football.
