Bringing The Chief back home with us after a win in Nacogdoches will be a very tough task, but I think this team is good enough to do it. When the Demons show up to play, we are as good as anyone in the Southland. Hopefully we are pretty healthy...everyone is banged up at this point though. I know there were hopes to get Deon Simon back. It makes me sick for him that he went down a few weeks ago. I'd find it hard to believe that when at 100%, Simon isn't as good as any DT in FCS.
SFA has had quite the roller coaster ride the past 4 weeks. In successive games they gave Southeastern their 1st SLC loss since 2012, lost to Same Houston, beat McNeese in LC, and then lost a heart-breaker to Abilene Christian last week.
Their running game has been very solid throughout though, averaging 214 yards per game this year. They are led by their All-SLC RB Gus Johnson who is averaging 131 yards a game. Soph QB Zach Conque, HC Clint Conque's son, has had a pretty solid season by looking at his stats & I've been impressed at times from what I've seen when watching parts of 2 of their games on SLC TV this year. He has had some real good games but has been and can be limited by the Purple Swarm. He's 6'5 230 lbs and is also a big part of their running game.
I do agree with what was said in the Nichols' thread and love that the winner of the NSU/SFA game should get into the playoffs. I know the Southland hasn't always got as much respect as deserved when it comes to playoff spots in the past, but hopefully that won't be the case. The Southland deserves 3 bids this season before several others confernces (Pioneer, Northeast) get a 2nd team in. Assuming SLU is champion & Sam beats UCA, they are both in. Then I think the winner of the NSU/SFA game deserves one of the 24 playoff bids, likely an opening round road game.
With the playoffs increasing to 24 teams last year and App St. & Georgia Southern moving up to FBS, that (essentially) creates 6 more spots compared to just 2 years ago. A Demon win will put us at 7-5 (maybe 7-4 according to what PurpleStorm was saying) with quality wins against LA Tech and Sam Houston. I think our power ranking will be high enough to where they won't be able to keep us out. I can't wait for the game Saturday. Fork'em!
