Well, looks like another year of transfers for the Northwestern State Basketball team. There will be at least 6 new players on the team between graduations, dismissals, and transfers. We'll see what else happens with the portal.

Certainly thought Forte had a bright future, but this is the new norm in college athletics unfortunately. Rough first year with the injuries and dismissals but I like Cabrera and believe he will get the ship pointed in the right direction.

The transfer portal is why I have almost given up on trying to follow college athletics. I enjoyed following players throughout their college career. Before the portal you could actually watch a team and individual players develop. Now, with college free agency in place, players come and go with regularity. The transfer portal is the death of constancy and stability in college athletics.

The transfer portal is the death of constancy and stability in college athletics. I completely agree, it is totally out of control. I don't even know what to think anymore and it seems like we sign all these kids and it doesn't feel like they will even finish their career with us.

This also signals a larger problem with the climate of our culture now. It’s as if we have no sense of fidelity and can’t finish what is started. Longevity and steadfastness are two characteristics of a person who is able to work through hardship and with people different than themselves. It seems that the transfer portal is more about being self-absorbed and not worried about how your decisions affect others in the larger body. Individual instant self-gratification is the byword of the moment.

Speaking some serious truth there, no one wants to hear it. But that is a serious problem in our culture.

I totally agree. I hate sounding like an old man on his front porch raving about the world going down the toilet, but it's the truth. I really feel like the positive reasons for having college sports in the first place have been forgotten. I have seen this Lou Holtz quote many times before, comparing today's athletes to the ones from 50 years before: "Today's athletes talk about rights and privileges and the players 50 years ago talked about obligations and responsibilities."

It’s also a double-edged sword. The players that come here and aren’t any good will transfer for lack of playing time. The players that come and play well will get poached by a larger mid-major or P5 school.
Life in the Southland.
