We are just not very good. This is not a game against Alabama where we can justify the disparity in talent. This is a middle of the pack finisher in the worst conference in FBS. I don't know what to say anymore.

I truly wish I wasn't so pessimistic but we are just not a winning program, and that won't change this season. Nothing I see is giving me hope to reverse that and we haven't been for 18 years. This is the outcome of poor leadership, poor decision making, and poor hiring. Its a consequence of all of those things and we as the fans and alumni have had to watch this product trot out on the field season after season, spend our money and time to watch a losing program beat its chest over winning 2 of its last 3 in a 3-8 or 4-7 season. It makes me sick to my stomach. We've heard every excuse in the book and im just out of patience for all of it.

A few positives tonight, very few, but we're not a good football team or program yet again. How has this happened? Fifteen years ago we allowed a hubris-filled football coach to run his pie hole like a used car salesman and he took the program down to nothing. He has since coached at several universities getting fired from them all. He was hired after we fired a 7-win coach the year before with 19 returning starters. One of our own to boot. We have never recovered from this very poor decision. We tried to hang our hat on beating La Tech in 2014, but we hung on to that far too long like grown men remembering a game when they were 6th graders and they beat the 8th graders in yard football. Tonight, we are making the 120th ranked FBS team look really, really good. We have given up 51 points in three quarters. That takes a special kind of talent. One I will refrain from describing here. La Tech surely deserves to win and I doth my cap to them for showing mercy in the 4th quarter or they may have scored 60-70. As for us, we surely deserve to lose and that's about all we have done for a decade-and a half. Here we are in another football season that will lay us bare yet again. SFA and EIU will beat us down playing this way, as will half the conference. The fruit of our sustained poor efforts will cause Turpin Stadium to look hollow yet again. Maybe as hollow as it has ever been in modern times. Attendance is down over 50 percent from 15-20 years ago. Fans are losing interest. I don't think the implosion of NSU football has been intentional, but this is how you destroy a football program. When you continually accept less than mediocrity. Mediocrity would be welcomed at this point. It can't be the players over a 15-year period. That's impossible. Where does the blame lie? You decide. Many of you know but don't want to say it out loud. Diplomacy is fine, but someone better speak up or NSU football will be in peril. A few may mock this message, but deep down, you know it's absolutely true. If we don't find a way to win again and/or find someone who can lead this effort successfully, we'll end up D-II, D-III, or worse. A football program can't survive without fans and proper marketing.

The descent started with stoker. He had several losing seasons before he went 7-5 and got fired. The southland was down to 6 teams in '08 and we filled out the schedule that year with a couple division two schools. That record is bloated. Stoker won with Roberts players and he went 5-5, and then had consecutive 4-7 seasons before he went 7-5 and was let go. Lets just squash that whole thing with hanging on to stoker. He was .500 at NSU. Which is better than now, but we were on the downhill with him and he hated it here so that was far from "the one we shouldn't have let go" We just hired a used car salesman after that, a washed up lazy washout who had a losing record at Nicholls with Thomas, and well...where we are now. All the while Willie Fritz and Lance Leipold wanted the job but we passed because "they weren't Louisiana guys" how effing stupid. Like I said poor leadership is why we are at this juncture.

.500 and two trips to the playoffs would be blissful right now. The current leader has won 30 percent of the games since he has been in charge. I like him and want him to succeed, but he has to do better. Not in interviews saying it's his fault, but on the field. He hasn't been good enough. He knows that. Now, could he grow into the job? That would be great. Did we really turn down Fritz and Leipold? What?

Yes, it is true that we passed on Fritz who went to Sam Houston and funny enough with Stoker's defense went to the FCS finals twice. Leopold was ready to leave D-III (Wisconsin-Whitewater) to turn us around and all he has done is turn Buffalo and Kansas into winners. Now I'm going to go down a different road, we simply don't recruit well at all. We continue to bring in washed transfers from schools that didn't want them. Tell me what did the Idaho State transfer do there to where we want him here? We have some talent at the skill positions but QB is paramount in the league we are in. So another year of the UIW's and SELA's winning the league while we are at the bottom. Laird should have been gone two years ago but a dream of a NSU alum turning this program around is what the administration wants. I think the current AD gave him a mulligan for this year but I don't think it lasts after this year.
A coach that I like is Knight from Ouachita Baptist, he's been there for years and has done an outstanding job in building that program. We need a fresh start and I believe he is the man to do it!

Alright boys, let's let the season play out before we judge the coaches and this particular team. If you take the first-halves from both games thus far, we have been down 23-10 avg at halftime and it seems the opponents both scored right before the half. That's not great, but it's also not terrible for the first two games, especially against FBS competition on the road. It's the second-half that is doing us in. We are getting pushed around in the second-half, and especially in the 4th quarter. It's like we go plumb flat there and that's what makes all this look really bad. Our offense played better this week, and our defense played worse. We're about to find out what we truly have in these next two games. If there ain't no improvement there, well that's too bad. If there is, that would be nice to see. Either way, I'm going huntin'. Seems I remember hunters showing up at the stadium for an evening game in their camouflage. That was a different time, I reckon. I don't see that happening again unless some big changes are made. I hope this staff and these players can get it started. Good luck, boys. Y'all have a good'un.

He was an outstanding coordinator at McNeese before us and at Sam after us, but there's a reason he hasn't been a head coach since then. Letting him go was one of the only things Burke did I agreed with to be honest. We have hired poorly since that point. And no, .500 shouldn't be good enough. If thats the standard I don't even know what the point of all this is, we should be competing for championships at a reasonably level in a mid level FCS conference and playoff berths. Despite our struggles in the past 18 years. Playing for the southland title and the FCS playoffs should still be the standard. Northwestern State has too proud of a tradition to accept anything else.
