Yeah the conference gave away the farm to keep them.

They really did. Let's me know they were pretty desperate. But now I want to know who are the other additions? UIW is gone, no way they stay now.

McNeese leveraged the hell out of that WAC invite. Hey, can't blame them for that power move.
The best available options i see moving forward is a merger with the ohio valley conference. Otherwise we are in deep trouble, because if any other regional d2 teams were on board we would already know.

Well it looks like things have turned back drastically in the southland's favor.
Wild how this basically is due to the ripple effect of Texas/OU going to the SEC. Big 12 invites AAC members, then the AAC raids the CUSA and leaves them in dire straits, and they invite Sam and NM state. Now the WAC is in trouble because as of 2023 they will have 6 members in their fooball league and now the texas schools are sending all sports to the west coast. Gotta be expensive. Lamar returns and "word" is that that UIW wants back in as does SFA. Wild turn of events, can't say i won't laugh but obviously glad to have them back in the fold.

Now Incarnate Word is back in the fold. This whole WAC/Southland thing just keeps taking unexpected turns. Things were really looking bleak and now the southland is in a position of strength. UCA is in a tough spot in the ASUN, and the Texas teams still in the WAC have to be considering all their options as they will be down to 5 football playing memebers in 2023 when Lamar comes back. Very interesting how things have unfolded.

This just keeps getting WACkier….Lamar forgoes their last season and will play in the southland this year. I realize that screws over the WAC schedule but I just honestly don’t feel bad for them. As of next year when Sam leaves the WAC will be down to 5 football playing teams and reliant on an alliance with the ASUN to fill out their schedule. I think things will continue to get crazier with realignment and I just hope the southland stands pat.

Hello friends and rivals. McNeese fan here who just wants to let you know that many Cowboy fans are pretty upset that our longstanding football rivalry will not be renewed this season. None of us can remember the last time the Cowboys and Demons did not play in football and know that our biggest crowds are usually when we play the Demons, and many McNeese fans love the beauty and history of Natchitoches.
I guess that just means we will have to beat you in basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, women's soccer, etc.
And since we will not meet on the football field (at least in the regular season), feel free to beat the Hell out of all the other conference foes!
Geaux Pokes!

Can’t believe the oversight by the scheduling committee to erase the 70-year history of our rivalry.
But hey at least we get to play Lamar!

Lol! “Yay! We get to play Lamar!” 🤦♂️ No offense to Cardinal fans, but I’m more inclined to enjoy the 70 year old rivalry more than this re-upped matchup. The Southland may be more stable with more participating schools, but is lacking in organizational leadership.

Well in defense of the conference they made a scheduling agreement with the OVC that occupies two dates on our calendar and had to move forward with that agreement at the time without knowing UIW/Lamar would rejoin. It’s a huge bummer, don’t get me wrong but I’m sure that it was attempted and couldn’t be worked out with how the schedule was laid out. I’ll take a huge boost in conference stability and not playing teams twice over going without playing mcneese for a year.

Another WAC defection - Univ of Texas Rio Grande Valley has joined the southland conference due to travel costs and alumni footprint. From what I read it will save them 25,000 miles of travel for all sports per year.
They are forming a football team in 2025, already have a stadium and head coach. Curious to hear thoughts, for anyone unaware they are located in Edinburg, Texas which is wayyyy down near brownsville/mcallen area.

Things are very interesting for the southland at the moment. I can only speculate, but it seeemed to be that Sfa basketball felt it was beneath them to play in the southland and needed a bigger stage after the success they experienced. Maybe the same for Sam football with aspirations to make the WAC a FBS conference. The rebirth of the WAC as a football conference was short lived. Lamar came back after a year, UIW left for a moment before returning, and Mcneese turned them down - and now UTRGV has come in the fold. the WAC football playing members had to pair up with another fledging conference - the athletic sun, just to put enough teams together. Now they have a very weird conference that stretches from kentucky to utah. So SFA is playing all non footbal sports in places like arizona, california, and washington. That is not cheap, their AD left for La Tech and rumors are there are budget cuts coming to the athletic department. Coming back into the southland would save them a lot of money, but will they allow for it or push for FBS or ride out the ship for the next wave of realignment? I have no idea, but I would like to see old rivalries be continued and think it would be a good move overall. Things are getting too weird with realignment and traditional rivalries are what make collegiate athletics so great.

The WAC has always been unsustainable for Texas schools. The hope was to get enough from the SLC and maybe Big Sky to defect and go FBS. They failed miserably. Sam will likely stay in C-USA, but it is a shell of itself and they will suffer because of it. They'll make money, though. One million a pop for playing most Power 5's. SFA and Abilene may try to go that way, too. Good luck if they do. They'll need it. As for UCA, they can likely survive in their new conference -- I forget the name -- but they would be better off in the Ohio Valley or SLC. The sledding for ALL sports will get tougher unless the economy fully stabilizes. Too many options for people today and inflation has become palpable in many households.
