Purplestorm, I don't want to disrespect you, but you have to be kidding me. You can't honestly think that by having the nickname "Demons" we are at a disadvantage. This just seems like an extremely trivial issue to have such an averse reaction toward. Our problem isn't that our mascot is the Demons.. Our problem is that we aren't winning games because we gave up over 500 yards of offense a game and couldn't figure it out offensively. Our mascot turns away prospective students maybe 1 out of 1000 applicants if I were a betting man. Our problems are, not athletically but as a university: 1. Location. 2. Location. 3. Public perception when comparing us to other La. institutions. 4. Degree programs currently offered than don't make us unique. Everyone has education and nursing. 5. Location.

Our basketball team on the other hand plays in probably the worst facility in the conference, prather while cozy is old and as of now we are in the process of getting funding to build a new arena. Its in the works, but Ill concede its remarkable that we can recruit kids to play there. Actually, I can tell you that we do not play in the worst facility in the conference. Not even the second-worst. Our facility is probably a lot closer to the middle of the league than you would imagine. And credit to the administration for doing everything they can to make it as good as possible for what it is. Well I stand corrected, you would know a lot better than me. Yes, credit to them for sure for maximizing what we have.

Purplestorm,
It is only my opinion, but I don't think anyone really cares about the mascot in the way you are thinking they do. People will come if they want to come; a new mascot will not change people's attendance or lack thereof. Look at Duke University, their "brand" is not hurting them. The level of play, conference affiliation and alumni base/local interest is what is carrying their high attendance. To be honest, one big problem for us is location. We are in a sparsely populated area of the country. If you really assess the situation, population per square mile is pretty low in North Louisiana.

You may call me a new member if you'd like, but I have been following the forum for a while. In my opinion the major problems with NSU stem from:
1. Retention
What makes a University in the middle of north Louisiana attractive to potential students, athletes, or coaches ? Your answers all may differ, but the point I'm getting to is that there is lot more motivation to leave than to stay. Whether it be a more recent losing tradition, the lack of stability of coaching staffs, or the fact that its at least an hour away from most elements that make a college town. As a former student athlete, I witnessed a lot of change during my 4 years @ NSU; I also watched a lot of things stay the same.
Yay! We have a great season, but wait, one of our better coaches gets a job offer that the University can't match or isn't willing to match. There begins the trend of replacing coaches that decide to move on to better opportunities. I'm just saying, why can't NSU be that better opportunity?
Yes! We have a top transfer coming to town, but it better be the weekend of Christmas Fest. You get my point?
