It would be hilarious if SFA came back to the Southland. I don’t understand how they can justify the travel for their non-football sports in their current conference.
In sincerity, I think SFA should come back to the Southland for competitive reasons. Sam Houston completely betrayed SFA with the whole WAC to C-USA move they pulled. I can’t blame them, though that program will never be a “big dog” in FBS, which very very few schools will outside of the SEC or Big 10. Sadly, everything is about money, and Sam Houston chased that. It seems SFA is trying the same thing, but I think Sam Houston is in a different stratosphere than SFA.

It seems SFA is trying the same thing, but I think Sam Houston is in a different stratosphere than SFA. I honestly don't find myself envious for the position Sam houston is in either, there is certainly a level of stability in some sense for moving to FBS, but they (in my opinion) are not a school that should be at that level. Their football stadium is far from impressive even at the FCS level in terms of aesthetics and atmosphere, and their attendance was far from what a Fbs school should draw even when they were making playoff runs and winning. Despite having an on campus that is 4X bigger than what we have at NSU. Maybe there are plans for major renovations and expansion, I would certainly hope so. I am not one to think that FCS football success should mean a jump to FBS. It has worked for schools with resources and large fan bases like Appalachian State, Boise State, Ga Southern, Old Dominion and has been a disaster for UMass, Idaho, ULM, TX State. Now they are playing florida international and New Mexico state on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and I'm sorry, but that just isn't what I would want as a fan or alumni. I have a lot of friends who went there and have hated leaving the southland and the changes that have followed since departing the conference with so many historical rivals to playing teams from virginia and kentucky on a weekday night. The smart thing for SFA to do would be to come back to the southland, they could be at the top of the conference in basketball again, have a much easier road to the ncaa tournament and cut their travel costs in all sports exponentially.

Pride and haughty spirits are terrible things. It's tough to go forward, but even harder to go in reverse. Why? Pride. The one thing that has ruined more lives and businesses than any other human weakness. I would say greed and the love of money run a close second. I think we're going to see whole universities begin to shut down. There will be more Birmingham Southern's over the horizon. Stay humble and survive. Get greedy and die.

In the end it’s all about self preservation. Sam, SFA, NSU, any program is jostling for position in this era of constant change and making hard decisions on what is best for their respective program. I may not like it as a casual fan, in fact I hate it, but that’s the bottom line. The league has changed a lot from when Troy State, Jacksonville State, SW Texas, were all a part of the league in the early 2000s. We’ve seen UCA come and go, the three Texas private schools join, the WAC departures and returns, Commerce and UTRVG move into the new look Southland. Change in college athletics is the only thing we can expect to remain constant, im just grateful at least for now, the southland looks to be stable.
